Pivot San Diego twelfth-grader Ryan Mauro has found immense support and flexibility in his schooling as he simultaneously pursues a career in professional hockey.
Ryan’s schedule requires him to frequently travel the country with his competitive hockey team and Pivot helps him feel supported with a dynamic and adaptable education.
“Pivot has been a helpful tool for me not only to grow smarter academically but to grow in sports as well,” Ryan said. “The flexibility lets me train stress-free, without having to worry about any due dates or tests. I think my strengths are time management between sports and school, enabling me to keep a high GPA. ”
In the classroom, Ryan loves learning about history to gain better context for international events, as well as how our nation was developed. Ryan’s recent acceptance to attend San Diego State University and early graduation from Pivot demonstrates his dedicated investment in his education.
On overcoming obstacles and balancing his goals, Ryan noted that “a challenge I had was creating a good work schedule which incorporated both school and sports equally. It took discipline to make sure my work was done, or to do extra work on a plane flight or long car ride the next day.” During his free time, Ryan enjoys surfing, fishing and spending time with friends.
For incoming and current Pivot students, Ryan suggests emphasizing communication with the Educational Coordinators as “they are very kind and will help you with anything you need.” Ryan values his fulfilling experience with Pivot San Diego and is excited to incorporate what he’s learned in his next chapter.
